Our beloved site-specific sonic gathering will return to Bratislava floodplain forests soon.

Join us in tuning into the intersections of human and more-than-human worlds through concerts and sound performances that embrace the local soundscape—the rustling of the forest, birdsong (...) —as compositional elements in a shared acoustic ecology.

How can we respect the natural soundscape while (co)creating within it?

The Less Is Sound project centers on deep listening as a pathway to interspecies sensitivity.

In the context of the polycrisis, active listening becomes a grounded practice. It requires slowing down, cultivating empathy, and moving beyond anthropocentrism—while acknowledging the privilege of doing so. Ultimately, it can sensitize us to our attunement and being in the world.

Join us in attuning to the soundscapes of the hidden forest venue and uncover the inherent music normally drowned out by city noise and overshadowed by visual stimuli.

Programme:

Five new works where forest ambience and music flow at the same levels. Art installation as a sensory extension, sunrise concerts bending the possibilities of accordion and alto sax, dreamy take on electronics, strings and more.

Arash Ghasemi – electronics, strings, field recording with a focus on memory and geography
Holo Collective – a speculative meditation on new forms of becoming after the collapse
Michaela Turcerová – alto saxophone decomposed and rearranged into a percussive organism
Jakub Šmiček– bare-bones, stripped-down, near-mute accordion
Motvilja – dreamy guitar ambient, electroacoustic minimalism meets tape loops

Date: Mornig 25th July (in case of bad weather back-up date: 26. July or 1-2. August).

Programme details:

Arash Ghasemi is an Iranian musician and sound artist based in Prague. His work spans experimental electronics, string instruments, field recording, and minimalist composition, with a focus on memory, geography, and the emotional resonance of sonic environments. Drawing on both personal narrative and broader social textures, Ghasemi’s music often moves between delicate atmospheres and raw, unpolished noise elements.

Holo Collective

"Ghost Signaling" is a story about a pair of species that co-evolved. It narrates new forms of becoming after the collapse of the world that once defined them.

Michaela Turcerová is interested in reviving the hidden and otherwise unheard colors of musical instruments. In her project IN FLUX, she combines modifications to the body of the alto saxophone, surreal amplification, external sound objects, and sine waves into a hybrid percussive organism. Shifting from subtle collages to industrial planes, this transformed sonic object finds itself in an intimate electroacoustic space, liberated from the traditional expectations, history, or cultural identity of the instrument.

In his work, Jakub Šmiček explores the accordion as a source of continuous, repetitive, and subtle breathing sounds on the borderline between improvisation and sonic observation. His approach emphasizes texture, resonance, and the delicate layering of sound as a way to expand and merge with the surrounding soundscape. He has collaborated with artists such as Simona Gottierová, Štefan Szabó, and Adela Mede, with whom he performed at Less is Sound 2023.

Motvilja (formerly metanoia elongation) is an experimental project by Jonáš Mačinga, in which he blends elements of electroacoustic minimalism, tape loops, field recordings, drone, and guitar ambient music.
